Join us at an SSRC Conference. Conferences are our most important events for sharing and learning about ongoing research in the stability of steel and steel-concrete composite structures. The Structural Stability Research Council holds the Annual Stability Conference (ASC) in conjunction with NASCC: The Steel Conference (North American Steel Construction Conference), hosted by the American Institute of Steel Construction.  Additional information on the ASC can be obtained by selecting ASC/NASCC below. In addition, the Structural Stability Research Council is involved in several recurring international conference series, of which Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures (SDSS) is the signature one.  Additional information on the SDSS series of conferences can be found by selecting SDSS below.  Finally, SSRC members are involved in a number of conferences with stability and stability-related topics. A sampling of these conferences is available by selecting More below.

Annual Stability Conference (ASC) / NASCC: The Steel Conference

About the Conference

The SSRC Annual Stability Conference is held every year as an exclusive track within AISC's NASCC: The Steel Conference. This conference brings together researchers from around the world to report and discuss the latest research in structural stability. The 3.5 day conference begins on Tuesday afternoon, a day before the formal start of the Steel Conference, with sessions consisting of a combination of research presentations as well as meetings of the SSRC Tasks Groups. Typical SSRC activities including the SSRC Conference at the Steel Conference are summarized below.

Call for Papers and Vinnakota Award

Research papers on the stability of steel and steel-concrete composite structures are requested annually for presentation at the SSRC Conference. The call for papers typically occurs in June with notification of acceptance in August.  Although the due date for papers varies from year-to-year, the typical due date is mid-January.  The subject matter covered at the conference includes a wide variety of topics. Examples of recent topics include:

  • Stability behavior in steel seismic systems

  • U.S. and international design standards related to the stability of components and systems

  • Stability of tubular members under a variety of demands

  • Local buckling of steel members

  • Stiffener requirements and optimization for steel plates, connections, and members

  • Stability in members with holes

  • Stability of straight and curved steel bridges

  • Probabilistic treatments for design against stability limit states

  • New analytical methods for stability

  • Stability of members at elevated temperatures

  • Bracing requirements for structural stability

Student authors of papers accepted for presentation at the SSRC Conference are eligible for consideration of the Vinnakota Award. The award is given to the best student-authored paper presented at the conference. The award selection is based on the full paper. To qualify for the award, the student must be the primary author of the paper, the presenter at the conference, and submit the paper on time. Note that the paper must be submitted prior to graduation, and that a limit of 20 pages applies.

SDSS

Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures (SDSS)

The Structural Stability Research Council supports the international conference series on Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures (SDSS). SDSS was born out of the SSRC International Colloquium Series, which started in 1972. SDSS is intended to summarize the progress in theoretical, numerical and experimental research in the field of stability and ductility of steel and composite steel-concrete structures. Special emphasis is always given to new concepts and procedures concerning the analysis and design of steel structures and to the background, development and application of rules and recommendations either appearing in recently published Codes or Specifications from around the world.
