Meet Dr. Peköz

Teoman Peköz, Ph.D., is a Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. He earned his Master of Science degree from Harvard University in 1959 and completed his Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1967. After gaining valuable experience in consulting and aerospace engineering, he joined the Cornell faculty in 1970. Following a distinguished 36-year academic career at Cornell, he became Professor Emeritus in 2006 and continued to serve the industry as an active engineering consultant until 2024.

A world-renowned authority on thin-walled and cold-formed structures, Dr. Peköz’s groundbreaking research led to Cornell University being designated a Center of Excellence in Aluminum Structural Design. He has authored major portions of code specifications and design recommendations for cold-formed steel, aluminum structures, and thin-walled-steel across both the United States and Europe, actively chairing and serving on numerous international specification committees. Among his many accolades, he received an Award of Appreciation from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) for forty years of outstanding leadership and technical service on the AISI Committee on Specifications, received the Structural Engineering Institute’s 2003 Shortridge Hardesty Award for his sustained contributions to structural stability, was named Chi Epsilon Outstanding Professor of the Year at Cornell in 1981, and holds an honorary professorship from the Xi'an Institute of Metallurgy and Construction Engineering in China.

The Beedle Award

The Beedle Award is SSRC's premier award, and it recognizes long-time members of the SSRC who have carried out world-class research or structural design in the field of structural stability, led in fostering cooperation between professionals worldwide, and made significant contributions to code development. It was established in honor of the late Lynn S. Beedle, who was an international authority on stability and the development of code criteria for steel and composite structures.

Award Presentation

Dr. Peköz’s pioneering work on cold-formed steel and aluminum specifications has shaped modern design provisions used by structural engineers worldwide. We look forward to honoring his legendary career, lasting code contributions, and global leadership in structural stability at the SSRC Annual Stability Conference in April 2027.
